With the project "Take a stand against violence, Phase I and II", implemented during 2018 and 2019, the political advocacy and organizational strengthening processes initiated by the AMA Association in the last four years continued to be strengthened. These processes helped to strengthen the AMA Association and provided the opportunity to identify the need to innovate and carry out other actions, so the project also involves the implementation of new strategic actions to provide a better and greater response to the high rate of sexual violence in girls and adolescents in the department of Petén.
To achieve the objectives of the two phases of the project, the implementation of the strengthening of the Technical Committee "Prevent with Education" of the South Western district of the department of Petén was contemplated, through the follow-up of the Strategic Plan 2018 and 2019 established by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. This plan contained the actions to respond by both Ministries with sectoral accompaniment in response to the high rate of sexual violence and early pregnancies in Petén and to comply with the Letter-Agreement "Prevent with Education 2016-2020".
The Technical Committee was created with the purpose of strengthening cooperation between both Ministries (Education and Health) through mechanisms for research, diagnosis, planning, monitoring, evaluation of implementation and joint follow-up, by linking with other sectors within the framework of the guidelines established in the aforementioned Letter of Agreement.
As a second component, the proposal focused on continuing to strengthen the organizational and operational structure of the Association, taking into account that this has strengthened it internally, which has greatly facilitated the achievement of the objectives set. This has allowed the AMA Association to become a leading and recognized organization at the local and international level that promotes the integral development of women and youth in Petén.
Finally, identifying the importance of innovating and carrying out strategic actions to strengthen the response to problems, a women's soccer tournament was held, improving the work begun and advancing towards a just and inclusive society, particularly in southern Petén where soccer is mostly played by men.

With the project "Take a stand against violence, Phase I and II", implemented during 2018 and 2019, the political advocacy and organizational strengthening processes initiated by the AMA Association in the last 4 years continued to be strengthened. These processes helped strengthen the Association to identify the need to innovate and carry out new strategic actions to provide a better and greater response to the high rate of sexual violence in girls and adolescents in the department of Petén, Guatemala.
The new actions focused on strengthening the life skills, leadership and violence prevention of adolescent girls and young women in southern Petén through the development of a girls' soccer championship.
To achieve the objective, the following activities were implemented:
A1. Seven meetings of the Technical Committee "Prevent with Education" of the Southwest district of Petén. (2018 y 2019)
Seven meetings of the Technical Committee "Prevent with Education" of the Southwest District of Petén were held to follow up on progress and make recommendations for the implementation of the 2018 Strategic Plan.
The Technical Roundtable was attended by the Technical-Administrative Coordinators and Supervisors of the Ministry of Education, the Director, Coordinators, social work and psychology personnel of the Ministry of Health of the municipalities of Sayaxché, La Libertad and Las Cruces, Petén, and the AMA Association.
This Technical Roundtable was established because the South West Petén Health Area (Sayaxché, La Libertad and Las Cruces, Petén) has historically had more cases of pregnancies, sexual violence and maternal deaths in the department of Petén, so it was necessary to promote sectoral actions to strengthen the response to the problems mentioned above.
The Strategic Plan of the Technical Roundtable focused on strengthening the inclusion of Comprehensive Sexuality Education - CSE - in the primary level education system, so during the first phase of the project, three Diploma Courses in CSE and Violence Prevention were held in 2018.
These diplomas led to the graduation of 190 teachers who teach fourth, fifth and sixth grade in 22 elementary schools, which allowed 4,750 girls and adolescents to receive comprehensive sexuality education in the municipalities of Sayaxché, La Libertad and Las Cruces, Petén.
During the second phase of the project carried out in 2019, seven Diploma Courses in CSE and Violence Prevention were held in each School District. A total of 315 teachers who teach in the fourth, fifth and sixth primary grades in 69 primary schools graduated. This enabled 7,875 girls and adolescents to receive comprehensive sexuality education in the municipalities of Sayaxché, La Libertad and Las Cruces, Petén.
A2. Two women's soccer championships "Take a stand against violence". (2018 y 2019)
The women's soccer championships "Toma Partido contra la Violencia Fase I y II" will be held with the participation of 28 teams in both tournaments (one tournament per year). The soccer teams bring together 280 young Maya Q'eqchí and Ladina women between 14 and 29 years of age from rural and urban sectors of the municipalities of San Luis, Poptún and Dolores, in southern Petén.
During the soccer matches, messages against inequalities and sexual violence - SV - experienced by girls, adolescents and women in southern Petén were sent, as the participants were sensitized on issues of prevention of SV by technical staff of Asociación AMA prior to the matches.
Also, during the soccer games, commercials were aired about the meaning and ways to prevent violence, harassment, femicide, early pregnancies and the importance of gender equality.
The championships had a positive impact. Participants were helped to break paradigms related to gender equality, since in Southern Petén soccer is mostly practiced by men, and participants and their families were empowered about ways to prevent sexual violence and unwanted pregnancies.
The participation of the girls was increasing. In the first championship in 2018, 13 teams participated and in the second championship in 2019, a total of 15 teams participated. Each game increased in attendance, which greatly strengthened life skills, self-esteem and leadership in the participants.
The number of elementary schools that teach Comprehensive Sexuality Education (EIS) and Violence Prevention (VP) in the southwestern area of Petén increased from 0 to 28%.
